Benbrook issued the following announcement on July 20
Benbrook’s newest community event is cleared for takeoff, and we need YOU to let your talent soar!
“Art on the Fly,” a drive-by art show, will be on exhibit daily November 2-14 in the east parking lot of First Baptist Church of Benbrook, 1015 McKinley Street. Visitors will enjoy the art display from the safety and comfort of their own vehicle. This exciting, new community event is FREE and all are welcome!
A CALL FOR ARTWORK
The City is accepting registrations now (artwork can be submitted beginning Monday, August 3). Artists of all stripes are asked to submit artwork for a chance to be selected for the exhibit. Children and adults are encouraged to participate, and the show is open to all ages and skill levels—we are not looking for perfection, just passion! Note, however, that the piece must be an original work, and that the subject matter must be inspired by Benbrook’s aeronautic history. So let your imagination take flight!
Benbrook served as the home of Carruthers Field, a military training airstrip during World War I, and the home base for one of our more famous visitors, flight instructor and dance king, Captain Vernon Castle. Our skies have hosted all sorts of air travel, from special military helicopter landings to the Fort Worth Thunderbirds’ radio-controlled model plane displays. Importantly, Benbrook has been home to generations of individuals and families employed in the aerospace defense industry, with many local residents building planes and careers at Carswell Air Force Base, Convair, Lockheed Martin, and the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base.
DON’T JUST WING IT: SPECS FOR SUBMITTAL
Most media are acceptable (acrylic, crayon, pastels, etc.); just keep in mind that bold, colorful art is best, as pieces chosen for exhibit will be enlarged to accommodate an impressive 9’ X 7’ framed fabric banner. Artists must produce original work on 11” X 17” paper or card stock. Full submission details will be forwarded to participants when they register.
Art pieces will be accepted August 3 - September 30.
Individuals planning to submit artwork MUST register in advance of submittal. Registration closes on Friday, September 18. For inspiration, participants may request a FREE copy of the book Images of America: Benbrook (while supplies last) at registration. The book is filled with photos celebrating Benbrook, along with our unique flying history, to help lift off your imagination.
There is no fee to register or submit your work. The show is not a competition, but each artist whose work is chosen for exhibit will receive a framed appreciation letter from the Mayor of Benbrook, Dr. Jerry Dittrich, and will be entered in a prize drawing.
For more information, please read our FAQs. Remember, the deadline to submit your artwork is Wednesday, September 30, 2020.
