CITY OF SOUTHLAKE: Why Do Road Projects Slow Down in the Winter?

Pot

City of Southlake issued the following announcement on Nov. 13

It’s no secret, inclement weather can have adverse effects on construction projects, especially when it comes to paving.

Installing asphalt during the winter months can affect the quality of roads and highways.

Unlike concrete, asphalt cannot be mixed, set or cured properly if temperatures are too cold. It also lacks density, which can create deficiencies in repairs and installation by causing the asphalt to ravel, soften or even crack.

For this reason, the Southlake Mobility team schedules paving projects mainly during the spring and summer months when the weather is right, so we can ensure asphalt is meeting the appropriate amount of density, installed securely and safe for drivers.
